Celtic have made a fresh approach for Aston Villa midfielder Scott Sinclair, according to sports journalist Peter O’Rourke.

Rodgers, who worked with Sinclair in their successful shared spell at Swansea City, confirmed his interest in a reunion yesterday/on Friday ahead of Celtic’s Scottish Premiership opener at Hearts.

Brendan Rogers’ Celtic side stand in the way of Hapoel Beersheva reaching the group stage of next season’s Champions League.

Asked if that player would be Sinclair, he added: “That would be announced as soon as he signs for the club”.

‘There’s no smoke without fire and there’s been a lot of smoke, ‘ he said.

Meanwhile, Gary Mackay-Steven looks set to return north with Ross County keen to take the player on a season long loan deal, while Scott Allen has completed his loan deal to Rotherham. I have said before, I have been really impressed with him. “But there is a number of players that we are looking at and all of them we hope can improve the squad”.

“Every team provides a challenge and a different challenge”, he said.

“But they are gaining experience and you have to give time to talent, encourage it, be supportive of it”.

“Hearts have been about it and will have a strong squad”.

“They are going to make mistakes but if you trust them and stick them out there, hopefully you will get performances but he (O’Connell) in particular was very good”.
