Celtic’s Stuart Armstrong given Scotland call-up

The midfielder’s stellar start to the season has finally seen him force his way into Gordon Strachan’s plans for the crucial Euro 2016 clashes with Georgia and Germany next month after previous squad snubs. Derby County striker Chris Martin, who has 5 Scotland appearances to his name, & 33-capped Hull City goalkeeper Allan McGregor are back within the squad, while Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths retains his place.

Like McGregor, Blackburn defender Grant Hanley is back after injury while midfielders Barry Bannan and Charlie Adam miss out.

As well as aiming for his global debut, the former Dundee United midfielder is hoping to secure Champions League football when Celtic face Malmo in Sweden tonight.

“He looks comfortable at the level he’s playing, which I like, and he’s becoming a major figure in games, which I like as well”.

Strachan admitted at today’s press conference that he expects a tough game in Tbilisi and had been impressed with Georgia’s performance in June’s 4-0 defeat to Poland where the Georgians trailed by one until the 89th minute. The 23-year-old’s attacking contribution could well be something that comes to the fore as he continues to settle at the club, with Armstrong scoring just once after moving from Dundee United last season, a figure he has already doubled this season after his double against St Mirren.
