Censor Board cuts 89 scenes from Udta Punjab

Ekta Kapoor, one of the producers of controversy-ridden “Udta Punjab”, says she is happy that eminent filmmaker Shyam Benegal has heaped praise on the film.

Co-producer Anurag Kashyap yesterday approached the Court claiming that his film had not received any certification from CBFC, despite the officials having watched the movie on June 3.

Recent Bollywood movie Udta Punjab which is based on Drugs and its influence on youth, Is facing problem in censor Board. “Films are for entertainment, not for defamation and we have no such intention as I, myself, am a proud son of Punjab”. The generation now is taking more time to mature.

The Mumbai High Court, which heard a petition in the Udta Punjab-Censor Board war on 10 June, will pass a ruling in the matter on 13 June.

The Revising Committee’s order has suggested 13 changes to the movie, besides deleting references to Punjab as it was allegedly not in conformity with the Cinematograph Act.

Censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani must apologize to Anurag Kashyap for alleging he may have taken money from the AAP to make Udta Punjab or else he should be sacked, the AAP said on Wednesday. The cuts ordered were for the high use of abusive language, drug abuse scenes and references of Punjab in the film. The revising Committee thinks that the film is defamatory to Punjab and therefore, the name from the title should be dropped off. This has outraged not just the makers of the film, Phantom Productions and Balaji Motion Pictures but has also enraged the entire film fraternity.

The Censor Board also justified the impugned order saying that there were no delay on its part and that it was proper and within the framework of the guidelines.

On Thursday, the court noted that the film was against drugs and was not “made with a view to malign the state or its people”.

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, “Udta Punjab” is a movie which delves into the drug menace of Punjab, which features Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in lead roles The film is slated to release on June 17.
