Central Michigan shocks Oklahoma State with no time left
The college football world continues to debate how a misapplication of a rule should be handled, like the one that cost Gundy’s Oklahoma State team a win against Central Michigan Saturday. Unfortunately, it was a play that should have never happened because the rules weren’t followed.

– Stunned No. 22 Oklahoma State on Saturday in a wild 30-27 upset win when officials mistakenly awarded them a final play with no time left on the clock and they scored on a 51-yard Hail Mary hook-and-ladder play. In addition, the Big 12 announced that the two-person video replay crew was also given a two-game ban, and the pair will not be able to work any postseason games.
Columnist Berry Tramel from The Oklahoman in Oklahoma City columnized today suggesting that Central Michigan give it back, basically.
The question has come up if collaborative replay could have helped this mistake.
The NCAA rule book states. As much time as we put into end-of-game situations that never crossed my mind. Jeff Carr, their leading rusher in the season opening 61-7 win over Southeastern Louisiana with 42 yards and a touchdown on six rushes, was in the game for only a handful of plays and did not touch the ball once, while Rennie Childs and Barry J. Sanders only got one carry each. Kroll tossed the ball to teammate and wide receiver Corey Willis before going down, resulting in the 9 yard game winning touchdown by Willis.
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy is still fuming from the controversial call that cost his team the game againts Central Michigan. Intentional grounding of a forward pass during a down in which time in the quarter expires is such a play, because loss of down is part of the penalty.
Still, Miami-Duke could have been considered an exercise in bad judgment – human error – by the replay crew.
A play that arguably shouldn’t have even been allowed to occur. Whether it’s officiating malfeasance or incompetence, that last play – the Hail Mary-hook-and-ladder – was granted based on an erroneous application of the untimed down.
The officiating mistake was a doozy – and it can not be fixed. He said the goal is to have rules that stay consistent throughout the game.
The ending at Oklahoma State made for a rough day and a rough first two weeks for the Big 12.
“In a contract with a Power 5 school, you’re going to exchange officials on your one-to-one games”.
This week, they are changing up the usual schedule with players coming to the mike before the coach. In our program, we talk all the time about controlling the things we can control and not getting caught up in the things we can’t control.
“We abandoned it early and it all got reduced”, Gundy said of the ball distribution Saturday.

No. 23 Florida is back in the rankings after slipping out after the opening weekend. “We have a stumble here and there – that becomes a focus”. After the game, though, Swinney said Boulware got his right ankle rolled up on and would be OK.
