Central team to visit Tamil Nadu to assess flood damage

Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the release of financial assistance worth Rs. 939.63 crore immediately to Tamil Nadu, chilly weather conditions intensified in the Kashmir valley.

A team of officials is also slated to visit Tamil Nadu on Thursday to make first-hand assessment of the damage caused by the floods.

Meanwhile, the heavy rains continued to batter parts of Tamil Nadu, as the death toll in the rain-related incidents mounted to over 176 yesterday.

Jayalalithaa has said her government had taken adequate precautionary measures which helped in minimising the loss of property and life.

Earlier today, Stalin presented a cheque of Rs one crore towards flood relief operations to Finance Secretary K Shanmugam at the Secretariat, a day after DMK chief accused the State officials for “dodging” accepting the cheque.

Citing an example, she said at Neyveli (Cuddalore dt.), it rained 437 MM on Nov 9.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, responding swiftly to the appeal, reportedly ordered immediate release of Rs. 940 Crore as relief. “The finances needed are effectively beyond the sources available with the condition, such as the State Disaster Response Account”, she said.

A government press release quoted Prasad as saying that he had read the detailed report of the state government on the rain damage and the immediate relief and restoration work carried out.

Traffic on the Tirunelveli-Tuticorin route was affected as rain water was allegedly diverted on to the national highway, to check inundation of residential areas, but it did not work.

Likewise, Chennai acquired the 2nd largest monthly rain registered in only the first 20 days of November in the past more than 100 years. “Infrastructure, including roads and bridges, storm water drainage systems, water supply and sewerage systems and electricity supply systems have been battered in many areas”, she said in the letter.
