Ceremony Marks 15 Years Since Sept. 11
After Sept. 11, that feeling of invulnerability was gone for good. The nation remained on its heels for weeks and even months after the attacks as we heard one heartbreaking story after another about the victims: 2,753 in NY, 184 in Washington and 40 in western Pennsylvania. But on this September 11 itself, “bringing the focus back to why we did all this – which is to honour those that were lost – is something very intentional”.

Outside of Washington, D.C., a third airplane flew into the Pentagon, the nation’s military headquarters.
U.S. President Barack Obama declared on Friday a three-day National Days of Prayer and Remembrance in memory of the occasion. At 9:37 a.m., American Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. And as time moves forward, the grief for those lost remains, as does the admiration for the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives trying to save others. When I arrived, I still wasn’t clear what needed to be done workwise, but one thing became obvious right away: As a manager, I had to be a calming influence and an understanding friend to my staff. He reported information that, at the time, seemed hard to believe.
At the Pentagon, 184 people lost their lives when one of the hijacked jets crashed into the Outer Ring.
Those who were born after 9/11 will only learn about the events of that day in their history books.
“Fifteen years are like 15 seconds”, Giaccone said. He calls it “a defining moment in your life”.
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said on Sunday news shows that the United States is safer now than it was in 2001 against another 9/11-style attack but continues to face the challenge of potential attacks by solo and homegrown violent extremists. In a single day, these deliberate terror acts of murder killed 3000 people from 57 countries. Fifty-nine others were on the plane.
But it’s not too late to change direction.

“My brother Dave, my younger brother, was killed in the Pentagon on 9/11”.
The federal government’s return to the World Trade Center sends a “message to the entire world that we will never, ever renounce our values or be afraid”, – New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Houses of worship throughout New York City tolled their bells and families of victims of the 2001 attacks – as well as the 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center – for hours recited the names of those killed. The initial shock as we viewed the images of the twin towers engulfed in flames and billowing smoke.
Hundreds also gathered for a name-reading observance in Shanksville.
Among the items are a portion of a retaining wall that held up to the attack, along with the 36-foot-tall Last Column covered with memorial inscriptions and missing-person posters. Fewer people were alive that day – this year’s high school freshmen, for instance, weren’t alive when it happened. The World Trade Center was formulated in the early 1960s by the Downtown-Lower Manhattan Development Association.
“According to the Post, Facebook linked to the following about the September 11th attacks: “… The huge 757 plane crashed into a grassy field, killing everyone on board. It was decided later that they were on a suicide operation to Washington. Other moments of silence will take place when each tower fell, as well as the attack on the Pentagon and Flight 93. They understood what was probably going to happen to them, and made a decision to fight back.
The U.S. National Park Service operates the national memorial in Shanksville. I’m on a plane that’s been hijacked, I’m on the plane, I’m calling from the plane. “And everyone tell someone you love them today”. Please see our terms of service for more information.

CeeCee Lyles was a flight attendant on the plane. “Even if there was no memorial, even if they left some broken stuff there, people would visit”. The nearly two-acre memorial has 184 illuminated benches representing those who lost their lives on the plane and inside the Pentagon.
