CES 2016: How smart are smart TVs?

Today at CES 2016, the company made public a line of four ultra-high-def TVs that it calls SUHDs, which are extremely thin and beautifully designed, and that highlight two major trends.

While the language each company is using to push its approach is remarkably similar, Samsung Electronics America executive vice president Joe Stinziano took a subtle swipe at the competition when he said Samsung’s TVs were “designed for the way people watch TV in real life”. This is all code for more: more technology in its displays, more connections, and more devices you didnt know you needed.

When paired with Samsung SUHD TV’s Quantum dot display, the new UHD Blu-ray player delivers a level of picture quality never before seen in the home. The sets can display “up to 1 billion of the purest colors” for brighter, life-like images with less distortion.

Perhaps the most surprising offering was the Samsung Smart Fridge, a refrigerator that’s fully connected.

Meanwhile, a recent announcement by Samsung said all Samsung’s 2016 SUHD TVs will apply IoT hub technology, allowing the TV itself to act as the controller for the entire smart home.

Once connected, the status of the various appliances appear on the LG SMART TV’s display, acting as an interface between users and devices. “In 2016, we’re going beyond anything we’ve done before to offer a remarkable synergy of design, engineering and craftsmanship which gets Canadians closer to their favourite content from TV shows and movies to games”. New Ultra Black technology also significantly reduces light reflection, further enhancing picture quality with minimal glare.

There’s also a new remote control that will automatically recognize and control other devices hooked up to the TV, such as a game console, streaming player, or home theater system.

Secondly, the new TVs underscore Samsung’s commitment to the Internet of Things, in which users can control products from appliances to doorlocks that are all linked wirelessly. This allows users to control all of the external devices with the Smart Control remote – with no setup required.

All SUHD and 4K UHD TVs this year will be HDR metadata-compatible (displaying whatever level of HDR the screen can support or ignoring it altogether if the set cannot use the information). It features a sleek, curved front design, and is available for pre-order now and for purchase in the U.S.in March 2016.

Samsung also announced the availability of a wide selection of additional apps – from eBay, ESPN, Uber, Voxer and more – to both the Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic. A full-sized keyboard cover enhances the usability, while a flexible hinge enables optimal, dual-angle viewing for the clearest display under any circumstance. One of the concepts features the world’s largest SUHD TV, a 170-inch display that utilizes the Modular display technology together. It announced that compatibility for the Gear smartwatch would be headed to iOS later this year.
