CES 2016: Nikon Brings High-End Cameras To The Table

The camera’s new 12 frames-per-second and 153-point autofocus system in action with 99 cross-type sensors will make you shock for a second. Nikon’s tagline for the D500 is “I am condensed power”, and it shows. The new Nikon DSLR is expected to start shipping on March 15.

One surprise about the D500 is that its APS-C format sensor has 20.9 million effective pixels, less than the company’s other recent (24Mp) SLRs of the same format. Consequently the D500 doesn’t have quite the same insane sensitivity range as the D5 – its standard range is ISO 100-51,200 and there are five expansion settings taking it up to the equivalent of ISO 1,640,000 – a stop lower than the D5’s insane maximum. In fact Mr. Woodman made last night’s announcement during Youtube’s key note announcement where the two companies said that they would be collaborate on even more content this year.

In addition, new and improved features and functions, such as a high-resolution touch screen LCD monitor, faster wired networks (via built-in Ethernet connector) and wireless networks, and double memory card slots that use the same type of media, to simplify and speed up the professional photographer’s workflow, while placing the D5 in the center of the connected ecosystem for visual communication.

While from the outside this doesn’t seem like a unique attempt from Nikon, considering action cameras have been a thing since the mid 00s, Nikon’s KeyMission 360 is among the first few compact action camera to shoot 360 degree video. Rounding off the spectacular movie-making experience is the capability to generate 4K UHD time-lapse movies in-camera. The high-resolution monitor enables extremely clear display with live view photography even when the display is enlarged for fast focus confirmation. On the back is a 3.2-inch touchscreen and all the manual controls you’d want. The company has launched two types of D5 (XQD-Type) and D5 (CF-Type). It’s also shockproof to 2 meters and waterproof up to 30 meters.

When connected to the D5, the high-speed transfer of image data to a computer or an FTP server over a wireless network is possible.
