CES 2016: Sony says PlayStation VR will have over 100 titles

This is the biggest moment thus far for Oculus founder Palmer Luckey and his young company, which in 2012 triggered the current virtual reality craze with one of the most successful Kickstarter campaigns of all time. Despite the lack of detailed information about it, the PlayStation VR is said to be compatible with the PlayStation 4 console.

Not to damper PlayStation fans’ expectations even more, but Forbes managed to get a reply from Sony regarding the recent listing.

Many are now speculating that the PlayStation VR will debut at $499, making buy-in much more costly than originally anticipated. It’s worth noting, though, that he was careful to say that the 100 or more titles will “play on PlayStation VR” and not that they will be exclusive to Sony’s experience. If this is the case, it’s likely we’ll see it arrive for as little as £230 – a complete bargain. If true it would mean that PS VR is a full $200 more than the Oculus Rift, a device that many find too expensive at this juncture. Sony, rather worryingly, didn’t deny the price.

That’s effectively the price of two PlayStation 4 consoles, and double the initially speculated price based on Andrew House, Sony Entertainment CEO’s comments.

According to PS Lifestyle, research firm SuperData estimates the PSVR to only cost around $400 to $600.

“The launch price is generally high”.

The firm is predicting that PlayStation VR – formerly known as Project Morpheus – will sell a whopping 1.9 million units before the end of 2016.

A bare-bones Oculus Rift kit wouldn’t cost much less than the bundle’s US$599 price tag, Luckey noted.

But Kaz Hirai told the BBC’s technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones that the PlayStation VR had attracted a lot of support from third-party games developers. So what’s Sony waiting for?
