Masahiro Tanaka allowed five hits over 7 2/3 innings and Ronald Torreyes had four hits including his first career home run as the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-0 at Angel Stadium.New York (62-59) broke a two-game losing streak to move within five games of the Baltimore Orioles for the second AL wild card and have won all five games against Los Angeles this season.

“It felt good, not just for me, but for the team, too”, Chacin said.

“I go back to something Ernie Zampese told me when I was 11 years old”, Eppler said, referring to the former San Diego Chargers and Rams assistant coach. He has now thrown out four of six runners trying to swipe a bag-not too shabby. Trout followed with a ground ball that Gregorius charged before throwing on the run to retire Trout.Nolasco retired 12 successive batters before NY added two runs in the sixth.

“I think these are important games for them because we are fighting for something”, Girardi said.

Using a fastball that regularly registered at 96-98 miles per hour, on both sides of the plate, along with an effective slider and curveball, Cessa’s work – especially against Trout and Albert Pujols – impressed manager Joe Girardi.

It took them 17 innings to get on the scoreboard in a three-game series with the Yankees that concludes Sunday. “And when we needed him to, he found some velocity and some good movement on his fastball”.

Deolis Guerra, JC Ramirez and Fernando Salas followed with hitless relief. Salas pitched a flawless ninth for his fourth save. Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks each had two hits but the Yankees left eight runners on base. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against right-hander Chad Green, who was making his first start since pitching six shutout innings, amassing 11 strikeouts, conceding two hits and issuing no walks August 15.Pujols lofted a single into center field with two out, moved to second base when C.J. Cron walked and scored when Andrelton Simmons bounced a single past diving shortstop Didi Gregorius.

Green made the most of his chance last time out, tossing six scoreless innings against Toronto.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, Adrian Beltre led off consecutive innings with home runs and Cole Hamels didn’t give up a hit until the sixth inning. “When you get an opportunity because of injuries and different things, sometimes you force your way onto a roster”.

Sanchez entered Saturday with four straight multi-hit games.

Yankees: 3B Chase Headley (sore Achilles) was held out, but is expected to return to the lineup Saturday. “That opened up a hole there at second base where Castro was playing”. It pulled the future Hall of Famer even with Mark McGwire for 10th place on the all-time home run list. If not for the at-great-personal-hazard fielding of Bronx outfielder Brett Gardner, though, the tally would’ve been a bit closer.

That was in the first inning, and that series of events lead to a 1-0 Angels lead, surprisingly it would also be the only scoring they’d need in this brisk Sunday afternoon win. Mark Teixeira began the inning with a double off the base of the center-field wall, then took third when Hicks lined a one-out single into center field. Didi Gregorius strikes out and Starlin Castro nubs a 10-footer in front of the plate to kill the rally.

“You can’t let these guys get comfortable because they can do some damage, ” Girardi said of Cessa’s willingness to zip fastballs inside. “We weren’t able to do that today”.

The New York Yankees combined a strong pitching performance along with a rare display of power to win one of their most complete games of the season. Twenty-four-year-old Luis Cessa will make his first Major League Baseball start.
