Challenge answered: Spurred on by Le Clos’ taunts, Michael Phelps posts faster
Phelps will surely compete in the same three individual events at Rio that he dominated in San Antonio, and it seems highly likely that hell be on all three U.S. relay teams after a disappointing performance by the Americans in Kazan.

Could he really be the greatest in the world at 30? And he was swimming in a pool and city he had never visited before.
Phelps’s finish is the fastest in the world this year in the 200-meter butterfly and sets him directly on a path to compete in Rio next year.
“It was always my dream to play professional football, I have always wanted to swim in a football stadium and it was a dream come true for me to do it here”, he said.
The 2015 Phillips 66 National Championships continued in San Antonio on August. 8.
Phelps insisted he hadn’t meant to needle any potential rival.
Sun appeared at the end of the night to receive the best male swimmer award.
University of Texas swimmer Will Licon established the No. 1 time, in 1 minute and 58.50 seconds, followed by former UT swimmer Austin Surhoff in 1:58.80.
“I think it just shows you anything is possible if you want something bad enough”, Phelps said. One of these swims on their own would suggested as much.
“My start was better today than it was yesterday”.
“There are a lot of things I could say but I won’t”. Back in May, Phelps indicated that the times of Tom Malchow, the 2000 Olympic champion, remained highly competitive, despite being 15 years old.
The 18-time Olympic gold medallist, underscoring his status as a major force with the 2016 Rio Olympics approaching, was under world record pace after 150m, but couldn’t bring it home inside of Ryan Lochte’s world record of 1:54.00, set in Shanghai in 2011. Cordes also won silver and bronze medals in individual breaststroke events.
The 4×100 freestyle relay, an event the Americans had won in 12 of the previous 15 worlds, failed to reach the finals.
And if you thought that Michael Phelps’ performance in the competition stops there, think again.
Phelps, of course, wasn’t allowed to compete at worlds this year. It was his quickest 200 fly ever when you exclude the Lazr velocity fits that have been banned in 2010.
“This all validates my expectations for where we should be”. His mother May told Yahoo Singapore earlier this week she had been staying up late to watch his races on television and spoke to him after every race. “I’ll enjoy this for a few days and then I’ll get back to work and hopefully there’s more to come”. “I wasn’t sure it would happen this quickly”.
Once he completed therapy and had his legal issues resolved, Phelps threw himself totally into training. In Charlotte in May, Phelps swam the 200 fly in 2:00.
A half a world away, Phelps wasn’t anywhere close to that performance, touching in 52.12.
I don’t do it to talk trash. “I know my facts about the sport of swimming”.

The men’s 100 and 200 back titles went Down Under too, with Seebohm’s teammate, Mitchell Larkin, claiming both in a double that inspired Seebohm. Thats something Ive got to fix for tonight. I’m doing the work I used to do.
