‘Champion’ Rooney not ahead of my players – Ranieri

Claudio Ranieri is surprised rumours linking Danny Drinkwater with his former club Manchester United have surfaced.

The Foxes go to Old Trafford on Saturday with Ranieri confident his strikeforce can outshine United’s.

Rooney, who has been at United since 2004, has had his moments this season, notably setting up Marcus Rashford for a last-minute victor at Hull and also supplying a brilliant right-wing cross that Ibrahimovic headed home in a victory against Southampton.

Forlan, now playing for India’s Mumbai City FC, endured a torrid start to his Red Devils career but went on to become a fan favourite and believes that Frenchman Pogba will too.

Will Rooney play against Leicester on Saturday? But I am sure they will be behind the team like they always are. They have very good young players. Now they are experienced players.

“I think he’s been brilliant since he’s come in”, said the captain.

The only two clubs without a win both have home games with mid-table opposition: Sunderland, 2-1 winners over Queens Park Rangers in midweek, against Crystal Palace, and Stoke City against West Bromwich Albion.

“Yes, but it’s prehistoric, not now”, he said.

“It was a long time ago, I’m OK”. “Every manager has his [rule] book and sometimes you need to do this”, he said.

“He is a great manager, a fantastic person”, said Ranieri.

“There were little things that could have been done and sloppy things cost us”. In the second half, we controlled it again and deserved the victory.

Critics, though, argue Rooney has lost his pace and explosiveness, and therefore is slowing down United’s attacking tempo.

While manager Jose Mourinho could risk the ire of his players by leaving out a key figure such as Rooney-and dropping him would seemingly confirm the validity of the recent criticism-it’s hard to see the Red Devils building any real momentum with him in the side. “I know that the world is full of Einsteins; I know that they tried to delete 16 years of my career”, Mourinho told MUTV.

“I know my role, I know what I can give to the team, but as a midfielder when you score of course you are helping more the team”.

“We tried to play as quick as possible, one, two touches, I think the team needed that today because they were going to press a lot”.
