Champions League: Tough draw for Arsenal and Chelsea

Holders Barcelona will play English Premier League leaders Arsenal in the last 16 of the Champions League, 10 years after the sides faced each other in the final.

Meanwhile Chelsea face a rematch with Paris St Germain who meet in the knock-out stages for the third year in a row.

PSG beat Chelsea on away goals at the same stage of last season’s Champions League and their only defeats in their last 39 games have come against Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Arsenal have been drawn against Barcelona in the round of 16 of the Champions League. “Although we beat them the last time, these are still two strong, ambitious clubs”, Blanc said on Tuesday.

“We’ve got world class players and it will be two fantastic games that we are looking forward to”, he added.

“The only guarantee we have is that we’ll have two great teams playing two great games”.

“People say PSG has got a big and talented squad – and that’s true – and if I have all my players available, then, yes, we can play all the games in the championship, the two cups and the Uefa Champions League”.

Some Twitter users picked up club secretary David Miles’ rather muted response to facing Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

PSV Eindhoven will take on Atletico Madrid, Dynamo Kiev will play Manchester City and Benfica will be against Zenit St Petersburg.

Struggling Manchester United are due to play Danish champions FC Midtjylland in the same competition, while Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faces a return to Germany when the Reds play Augsburg.

Although the club itself might point to some sort of typo to explain the weird mistake, it seems odd to think that Brondby IF were the team selected, considering that they did not even feature in this year’s competition.

Arsenal pretty much have made all the mistakes they could have in the group stage and that would serve as a learning curve for them.

With Alba and Alves committed to attack, it allowed Depor more space to run into on the break and they picked off their hosts with smart, efficient play in the transitions, creating few chances but chances of good quality.

Juventus had won the first three of the teams’ meetings but Bayern are now unbeaten in the last five, recording four victories.

While the Gunners gave the Spanish giants a run for their money in the 2006 Champions League final, more recent clashes have been straightforward for the Catalans.

Last season, Blanc’s side eked out 1-1 and 2-2 draws to seal an aggregate win on away goals, following a quite similiar but vise-versa result from the 2013-2014 season in the quarter-finals where PSG won 3-1 at home but lost 2-0 away.
