Reading have been on the hunt for a new boss after giving Brian McDermott the boot last month.

A press conference was held at the Madejski Stadium this afternoon to unveil the former Holland centre-back, who has left his role as head coach of Jong Ajax, the reserve team of Dutch giants Ajax.

The 43-year-old ex-Holland worldwide, who was introduced to the media at a press conference at the Madejski Stadium, has signed a two-year contract with the Sky Bet Championship club.

Reading finished 17th in the Championship table in 2015-16.

During his unveiling at a press conference, Stam told reporters: “I spoke to Koeman and Hiddink about the job”.

It is thought the ex-Manchester United and Netherlands defender will sign a two-year contract, with the option of a third year.

It is not known whether current first-team coach, Steven Reid, will stay with the Royals under the new backroom set-up.

When asked about the job at hand, the Dutchman said: “We know quite a lot about the Championship”.

“He has achieved the very highest honours as a player and has already won a title in his coaching career, so now he can begin what we believe will be a very successful journey in management at Madejski Stadium”.

‘If you go in to management you want to pick from every manager or captain you have played with.
