Changes to be announced in Chicago police training, Tasers
Van Dyke’s attorney, Dan Herbert, said his client had feared for his life and that the video did not provide a complete account of the shooting. Van Dyke’s lawyer said he may ask for a change of venue.

The officer was held in a Cook county jail for six nights before posting $150,000 for his $1.5m bond.
On the same day the charges against Van Dyke were announced, the city complied with a court order to release dashcam video of Van Dyke shooting McDonald, setting off anger and protests in Chicago.
Although McDonald had a knife during the shooting, he was deviating away from Van Dyke, who was about 20 to 25 feet away.
The release of the video set off protests, forced the resignation of the city’s police chief and has led to an ongoing wide-ranging civil rights investigation of the entire Chicago Police Department by the U.S. Department of Justice.
Police on Saturday shot his son, 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier, and a neighbor who lived in the same building, 55-year-old Bettie Jones. The department will not say how many officers fired their weapons or what the two people were doing before they were shot.
The mayor’s office billed the homecoming as Emanuel “cutting his family trip short”, but did not immediately respond to questions on how long Emanuel was scheduled to be in Cuba, when he left and when he originally was slated to return.
Herbert also said that policy changes in the Chicago Police Department, including more education, would be beneficial.
Hunter added that he and others think there is a culture within the Cook County criminal justice system and the Chicago Police Department “where police feel comfortable with murdering African-American people”.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Emanuel “is in deep trouble”.
The footage has caused widespread outrage and sparked days of street demonstrations, leading to the resignation of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.
The shooting on Saturday was the latest in a string of high-profile deaths in the city that have drawn attention to police tactics and questions about oversight by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
” ‘Today, we’re asking you, right in front your house, for Rahm Emanuel to step down, ‘ said activist Ja’Mal Green, who until recently participated in the mayor’s anti-violence campaigns”.
Both were black. Police were responding to at least one 911 call about a domestic disturbance involving LeGrier and his father.

A cousin of LeGrier’s, Albert Person, says police indicated to LeGrier’s father afterward that the teenager opened the door holding a bat as officers arrived. Even after mercilessly shooting the victim, Van Dyke pleaded not guilty on Tuesday.
