Chargers drop season finale to Broncos
Manning is cleared to play now but will serve as backup to Brock Osweiler, a first in his career.

Logically, even before seeing Osweiler throw two interceptions in the first half of Sunday’s crucial game against the Chargers, it should have been obvious that even a close-to-healthy Manning gives Denver a better chance at winning the Super Bowl than the inexperienced and flawed Osweiler. The Broncos will get a bye next weekend before hosting a Divisional Round game on either January 16 or 17.
It was a sour end to the regular season for the NFC West champion Cardinals (13-3), who already had clinched the NFC’s No. 2 seed and a first-round playoff bye. Out trotted Peyton Manning, to the roar of the crowd. He replaced Brock Osweiler in the third quarter Sunday and led the Broncos to a 27-20 win over San Diego.
But that’s when Broncos coach Gary Kubiak summoned Manning, who helped deliver a win for the Broncos (12-4).
Apart from the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers trying to overthrow the Houston Texans and New York Jets from the postseason berths, the other 10 places have already been snapped up, meaning that most of the tension around the league’s other games today will be on who will shuffle to which seeding spot ahead of the Playoff starting. With the score 20-20 Rivers threw to Williams over the middle on third-and-7.
Osweiler is 4-2 as the starter, including Monday’s win over Cincinnati, which clinched a playoff berth.
None of that was his fault, but the Broncos needed a spark and Manning provided it. But just my gut told me to turn it over to him and let him lead the football team. Perhaps they just trusted him to do exactly that, knowing what a leader he can be. “He’s worked really hard to stay there for us and it couldn’t be a bigger day to be there for us”.
CLEVELAND – Ben Roethlisberger threw three touchdown passes, Pittsburgh’s defense dominated and the Steelers slipped into the AFC playoffs with the win over Cleveland, expected to fire coach Mike Pettine.
Will Peyton Manning start another game for the Denver Broncos?
Relying more on his leadership than his passing arm in his first action in seven weeks, Manning drove the Broncos (12-4) to a pair of field goals by kicker Brandon McManus and on marches that ended in touchdown runs by C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman. The Broncos also lost Pro Bowl pass rusher DeMarcus Ware to a knee injury shortly after his first sack since returning from a bad back last month. In fact, in my personal opinion, the only turnover he was responsible for was the fumble that slipped out of his hands as he got sacked.
Hey man, you can not write a script any better than that.
That performance prompted Denver to pull Manning from the starting line-up to give him time to heal from various injuries including a torn plantar fascia in his left foot.
And after struggling through most of the season, the running game finally appears to be rounding into form as the playoffs approach.
“You be careful out there tonight, coach”, cornerback Aqib Talib hollered at defensive coordinator Wade Phillips in the locker room. Of course, this means that they might see a dip in their jersey sales. “It’s not true today and it won’t ever be true”, Manning added.

Whether or not Manning is publicly exonerated regarding the HGH allegations will go a long way toward how he’s remembered at the end of his career – whether he gets the Roger Clemens treatment or not. “That’s what I felt”, Kubiak said of his decision. I don’t know. None of us have. “A week like I’ve never been through”. “It’s just sickening losing like this”.
