Chargers rookie Joey Bosa holding out, not reporting to training camp

In the next chapter of the Joey Bosa contract saga, the no. 3 overall pick will not report to San Diego Chargers training camp, as multiple sources reported.

Bosa and San Francisco 49ers rookie guard Joshua Garnett are the only first round picks who remain unsigned.

The Chargers made Bosa the third pick in this year’s draft, with the hope that he would make a big impact on their woeful defense immediately. Both players are represented by CAA.

Bosa has already missed OTAs and the team’s mandatory minicamp, and now he’ll miss the start of training camp. The Chargers and Bosa’s representatives apparently can’t see eye-to-eye on the deferred signing bonus payment according to ESPN. Traditionally, the Chargers have included offset language in players’ contracts to protect the franchise from paying a player’s full salary in the unlikely event that San Diego releases a player during the guaranteed portion of their deal.

What Bosa, and his agent, are asking for from the Chargers is no offset language. Bosa’s camp wants more of that money paid up front.

The Chargers declined to comment to ESPN, but Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said earlier this week they are “still working through it”. I know a lot of other teams probably operate the same way.
