Chargers to sign speedy WR Benjamin

The lack of playmakers in the passing game showed, with the Chargers struggling to score.

Via NFL Network’s Rand Getlin, the Chargers have an agreement in place with receiver Travis Benjamin that will become official later on Wednesday, when free agency officially begins.

Benjamin caught passes from eight quarterbacks during his four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, so he gets an opportunity at stability, playing with one of the best in the league in Rivers.

When the 2015 season ended, Rivers was throwing to practice squad receivers and their backups. He pulled in 68 catches for 966 yards and five touchdowns.

If Benjamin does sign with the Chargers, he’ll have chosen them over the Browns, Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans. His breakout season is even more impressive considering Josh McCown, Johnny Manziel and Austin Davis were his quarterbacks.

Malcom Floyd’s retirement opens a spot in the starting lineup in San Diego. He will likely be a nose guard for the Chargers, although he could play DE as well. Benjamin has a career average of 14.2 yards per reception.
