Charges laid over NBA star cousin’s death
Two brothers were charged Sunday in connection with the murder of Nykea Aldridge, a mother of four and cousin of Chicago Bulls star Dwyane Wade. Darwin Sorells, on the other hand, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. They’ve both been held without bail following a court appearance on Sunday.

Nykea Aldridge, 32, was pushing her baby in a stroller on her way to register her children at a school in Chicago’s South Side when two men reportedly walked up and opened fire on the man she was with. She wasnt the intended target, Cmdr.
In a press conference Sunday, Chicago police Commander Brendan Deenihan said the Sorrells were shooting at a driver who had dropped off women in the area, and shot Aldridge instead. Johnson said the Sorells brothers are repeat offenders and two of about 1,400 individuals who are the primary drivers of gun violence in Chicago. Both are documented gang members and on parole for previous gun charges, police said. NASA funded the study run through the University of Hawaii.
Johnson described the Sorrells brothers as known “gang members”, and suggested that Chicago’s problem with gun violence is out of proportion to its population. Ironically, just last week, Wade and his mother participated in a town hall meeting on ESPN that focused on violence in Chicago and urban communities.
According to another report by ABC13, the family had planned a Sunday afternoon vigil for Aldridge at the Willie Mae Morris Empowerment Center in Chicago, which was “was developed in part to assist the city of Chicago in their continued efforts to decrease the violence and fatalities by providing a safe haven and high quality programming for our youth”. This July alone, there were 65 homicides – the most that month since 2006.
“My cousin was killed today in Chicago”, Wade said in one tweet.
Wade, who has spoken out about gun violence in the past, expressed his sorrow and frustration on Twitter, saying, “Another act of senseless gun violence”.
“My brother is gay and growing up I know firsthand when those sermons come across the pulpit that rebukes him, he nearly feel like the person don’t love him that made him”, Sir said, adding that “Jesus didn’t come to condemn the world”.
“RIP Nykea Aldridge… #EnoughIsEnough”, the National Basketball Association star tweeted on Saturday.
Dwyane Wade’s mother, Jolinda Wade, a senior pastor of New Creation Binding and Loosing Ministry in Chicago, spoke on the importance of helping young men, such as the offenders, to transform their minds and find a better direction with their lives.
The Republican vice presidential nominee would not answer direct questions Sunday about guns from IN coming into Chicago during CNN’s “State of the Union” show.

Chicago authorities have said more than half of the guns used in crimes come from out of state, including about 20 percent from Indiana. His first tweet misspelled Dwyane Wade’s name and was deleted. He tweeted about his cousin’s death Friday night.
