The Royal couple stopped briefly to chat with the gathered dignitaries before heading straight from the airport to the Australian War Memorial to attend a Remembrance Day memorial.
“If the Queen’s reign comes to an end and the constitution is in the form it is today, Prince Charles will become our head of state”, he said. Chatting to members of the crowd after the service, Camilla admitted it was “very British weather” while Charles labelled it a blessing.
It is believed to be the first time Charles has met Mr Turnbull who is Australia’s fourth leader since 2013 and was once the public face of the country’s republican movement.
Exploiting the moment, a new poll commissioned by the Australian Republican Movement, shows only 27 per cent support for Prince Charles becoming King of Australia.
It is unclear if Mr Turnbull and Prince Charles will discuss this suggestion when they meet on Wednesday.
Premier Colin Barnett has said he plans to give the royal couple a taste of “the very best West Australian produce”, while the venue will offer stunning views over the Indian Ocean.
“As our future King and his wife touch down for their five-day tour, the Australian people are getting behind the idea of an Australian head of state in a big way”.
“It’s long overdue and now we have a republican as prime minister, a republican as leader of the opposition, I’m certainly keen and look forward with Malcolm Turnbull, to working with him to provide much needed momentum”, said Shorten.
Following their visit to the winery, the Duchess of Cornwall attended a roundtable event which centred around domestic violence.
The Telegraph and other publications used the image taken while the royal couple were looking at hand-forged kitchen knives owned by cutler Barry Gardner from the winery.
Cooking with truffles, planting trees at the arboretum, observing Remembrance Day, touring the National Museum and meeting politicians are on the cards for Charles and Camilla during their busy visit to Canberra on Wednesday.
