Charleston Southern coach: ‘We’ll be fine’ vs. FSU despite suspensions

In a game that promises to be ugly anyway, since the Buccaneers (1-1) were down to their third quarterback, the No. 3 Seminoles (1-0) will be facing a Football Championship Subdivision team decimated by 14 suspensions due to an NCAA rule involving the use of left-over book money in the CSU student bookstore. A rule that went into effect August 1, 2003 says “There is no dollar limit for books a student-athlete may receive, provided each book is required for a course in which the student-athlete is enrolled”.

“I was very proud of the way we started the game”. About 30 mins before practice started I was given the option of sitting out this week against FWU or next game against a conference opponent. Florida State was without starting OL Kareen Are (concussion) for the second straight game Saturday, while starting fullback Freddie Stevenson (ankle) – who actually played and scored a touchdown in the opener against Ole Miss – was also held out.

Robinson, a Tallahassee native, will miss his chance to return home against the third-ranked team in the country.

The punishment gained attention Thursday night when a few Charleston Southern players posted on social media that they had been suspended for using book money improperly.

Korn accused his university of “taking away some seniors” shots to impress National Football League scouts and hurting our image as men who have done our best to change the entire image of a program that was nothing short of a joke when we first got here’. Sixteen student-athletes suspensions were staggered over the first two weeks of the season and two additional players will serve their suspensions at a later date.

Yet, it is apparent the Charleston Southern administration did not properly explain the rule to its players or else the Buccaneers likely would have a full complement of players this weekend.

The onus here is most certainly on the CSU administration for failing to properly notify their players of the weird rules they were subject to, then, as Korn says, going on a “witch hunt”.

“You have to try to limit the things we do and find out what he can execute”, coach Jamey Chadwell said.

The players were suspended for spending scholarship money allocated for books on other items, a source told ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. NCAA rules do not limit how much money programs can give athletes to spend on textbooks, but the money must be “equal to the actual cost of the books purchased”.

Frank Cirone, a redshirt junior, wrote on Facebook that the entire offensive line was suspended for the game.

‘The protection of its students/athletes should be a number one priority. “I think we’ll be fine”. Charleston Southern’s first two quarterbacks were injured last week against Kentucky State. That will occur against Albany State on October 8. Florida State’s going to rough them up enough.
