Running back Ben Robinson said he and more than 30 of his teammates were told of their suspensions on Thursday and given the choice to either sit out the Florida State game or their conference game the following week.
Robinson claimed in his Facebook post that bookstore employees told players to spend left-over book money on other items “because we would not get it back”.
Senior wide receiver Colton Korn lashed out at the school on Facebook as well for allegedly failing to communicate the rule that prohibited players from spending the money on other supplies. So we all have to pay a fine and sit out a game.
On Saturday, the third-ranked Seminoles play against Charleston Southern (1-1), a Football Championship Subdivision team.
As the NCAA rulebook lays out, schools can give out money for book purchases, but only the exact amount needed to buy the books.
Having played their season opener on Monday night, the Seminoles effectively had just two days of practice to get ready for the Buccaneers, who entered the game ranked seventh in the FCS Coaches Poll.
Florida State’s Travis Rudolph escapes the tackle attempt of Charleston Southern’s D.J. Curl to score his second touchdown in the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016, in Tallahassee, Fla. Now the school and NCAA are saying it’s against the rules. “Other items can not be covered by that financial aid”, the school said in its statement. In a statement Friday, the university said it is working with the NCAA, the Big South Conference and “an outside consultant” to review any additional rule violations.
FCS power Charleston Southern is preparing for this week’s big matchup against Florida State.
The Bucs lost starting quarterback Kyle Copeland and backup QB Shane Bucenell to injuries in their 57-7 win over Kentucky State last week.
Minus 14 players, including 10 starters, Charleston Southern was minus any chance against Florida State.
“I was very proud of the guys that came down here under the circumstances and the way they fought”, fourth-year coach Jamey Chadwell said.
Offensive lineman Frank Cirone posted, “It is unfortunate Charleston Southern University only cares about itself as an institution”.
“I’m bewildered at the at the lack of respect the university is showing us athletes and student body as a whole”, Korn wrote on Facebook.

The junior scored Florida State’s second and sixth TDs of the game before giving way to backup RB Jacques Patrick.Patrick notched one TD on Saturday late in the second quarter. While Florida State started hot in the two teams’ second-ever meeting, it was the opposite for the Bucs, whose first five possessions ended in two fumbles and three punts.
