Charlie Strong takes over defense for Texas, demotes Bedford

“I guess he’s checking on me, making sure I’m OK”, Strong told reporters. “I haven’t jumped off the stadium yet”. If fired after the season, he would receive a $10 million buyout. That includes a Texas win past year when it was 16-point underdogs. When Rudolph connected with James Washington on a 54-yard scoring pass on the next drive, the Cowboys led 14-0.

Strong said Bedford will help with the defensive backs.

Texas, a 22-point favorite, booted a field goal on the first possession of the game against OU, then turned a blocked punt into a touchdown for a 10-0 lead.

Bedford, a Texas alumni, has been Strong’s DC since his days at Louisville but there is clearly a disconnect in Austin. Good job on them for their game plan.

Longhorn players expressed support for Strong and his move to take over the defense. The constant underachievement by the Texas Longhorns football team shouldn’t be tolerated and it sounds like Mike Perrin is nearing the end of his leash with Charlie Strong. “I’m going to coach the defense”.

Of course, nobody wants to talk about the rough shape of the program when Strong inherited it – no National Football League players on the roster, slippage in recruiting, etc – but whoever took over the program had a multi-year project ahead of them.

Strong has to be feeling claustrophobic these days.

This season started with a win over Notre Dame that pushed the Longhorns into the Top 25.

Strong is running out of fall guys.

“It’s like anything else”, Bedford said.

“This time right now feels like the move to be made”, said Strong whose own job may be in jeopardy. The program has now made a change at coordinator within the first five weeks of the season three times since 2013. That’s a lot of points for a loss.

At the time, Strong was one of the hottest coaching candidates on the market and it seemed that Texas athletic director Steve Patterson had struck gold with his coaching hire.

“Our PAT blocks were a huge part of the game”, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. Wolken said Herman will likely consider the Longhorns, but should be wary of the University’s administration. “We can still make a lot of noise”. He was shaken up a bit on the play, but Rudolph was able to regroup and throw for two more scores before intermission. In 2014, it was No. 2.

Bedford has been under fire since virtually the beginning of his tenure with Texas, not only for allowing points, but for a defense that often looked out of position and confused more often than not. He led Texas to a surprising upset of the Sooners past year. “I’m not saying we don’t believe in each other as a team”.

Sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson, who has yet to become a defensive force, was asked if Longhorns are risky when they’re backed up against a wall?

If Strong survives this season, more change is nearly certainly coming. The Longhorns then allowed the Bears to take a 50-43 lead with 3:41 left in the game. Doing it permanently is another.

Though Herman will certainly protest the increased speculation about his future, preferring to keep the focus on Houston’s long-shot push toward the College Football Playoff, the reality is activity is already underway behind the scenes in the coaching search industry.

“I don’t know how much you can totally change, but it’s something we’ve got to be alert to that we’d have to adjust to”, Stoops said.

“We’re not executing on the play”, Nelson said.

Strong has carried himself that way through the entirety of these three seasons, and if those reports are true, the reward will be getting shown the door in a sport where immediacy is everything, especially at the blue-blood programs.
