There have been both peaceful demonstrations and violent every day since Tuesday’s shooting of 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott: the black man fatally shot by a Charlotte police officer.

In the dashboard camera footage, embedded below, Scott takes several steps away from the auto before an officer fires four shots at him.
After the gunshots, Mr Scott can be seen lying face-down on the ground while his wife says: “He better live”.
In a press conference on Saturday, Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney said he made the decision to release the footage when he received assurance from the agency that doing so would not adversely impact its investigation.
Police bodycam and dashcam footage from the fatal shooting of African American Keith Lamont Scott in Charlotte on Tuesday has been released to the public amid an ongoing investigation.
Scott, a 43-year-old black man, was killed Tuesday by a black officer who police say opened fire after Scott got out of a auto with a firearm during a confrontation. The officers initially noticed that the 43-year-old was rolling a marijuana joint in his vehicle – and then saw him raise a gun, the police said.
He also said that his officers didn’t break the law but noted that the State Bureau of Investigation is continuing its investigation.
Putney said Mr Scott was in possession of a gun during the confrontation.
A two-minute video, recorded by Scott’s wife Rakeyia and released to USA media outlets on Friday, showed the events leading up to the shooting, but not the shooting itself. Witnesses-and Scott’s widow, according to her video-said he wasn’t armed, and neighbors claimed he had only a book.
He said the officers “are absolutely not being charged by me”.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney has said that video taken by police body cameras supported the police version of events, but he has refused to release the video publicly. Hundreds of protesters have descended on the city centre for the past five nights, prompting the state’s governor to call in the National Guard and the city’s mayor to put in place in a midnight curfew.
The voice of Scott’s wife, who was filming the situation on her cellphone, can be heard in the video, telling officers her husband doesn’t have a gun. “He has no weapon” as they yell at Scott, “Drop the gun!”
He said he chose to release them in the interest of transparency and because the State Bureau of Investigation, which is leading the inquiry in the case, had completed key interviews with witnesses and assured him the release would not harm the integrity of their investination. He also said Mr Scott was in possession of marijuana at the time.
Scott’s daughter, Lyric Scott, also shared a Facebook livestream showing the moments right after the shooting, narrating tragically, “The police just shot my daddy four times for being black”.
