Cheerful Irish donkey saved from flood after heroic rescue mission

Following his heroic rescue, the donkey, now called Mike, was looked after incredibly well and was returned to his owner, who was in tears while witnessing the rescue.

Live updates of the rescue were posted on Animal Heaven Animal Rescue’s Facebook page as the team worked to bring the donkey to safety.

A drowning donkey was so relieved to reach dry land yesterday that he appeared to break into a wide grin.

The donkey has been named “Mike” in honour of his rescuer and is now resting up at an animal shelter.

“Code red… there is a donkey stranded in deep flooding in Killorglin”.

A donkey was stranded in rising floodwaters and his owner called out for help.

The charity immediately put out an appeal on social media, asking if anyone had a boat to help rescue the donkey. “I have ropes, etc. Please get me help”, was the frantic message AMAR sent out on Facebook.

Mike the donkey was dried off with towels and given a bowl of hot mash to make sure he was cosy and warm after his watery ordeal. With lots of deep struggles, they were finally able to get Mike to shore. All he needs is loads of tlc.

“He will be going back to his owner when he is better and recovered and when the floods are gone and his gate and fences are fixed”.

She said Mike had a small amount of fluid in his lung, but was expected to make a full recovery.

“Mike would like to say hello to all his fans and say thank you very much for all your lovely comments wishing him well”, AHAR wrote on Facebook Monday morning.
