In the meantime he retreats to the sidelines, just as he did in September 2007, when Abramovich’s vision for Chelsea caused their first parting of the ways.

Although Mourinho has won every honor in English soccer, he never managed to win a European trophy in either of his two spells at Chelsea. Emenalo said Chelsea were “in trouble” but rejected suggestions that the players had let the club down.

Chelsea face Sunderland this weekend just one point above the relegation zone after losing nine of their first 16 Premier League matches this term.

Chelsea are due to host Sunderland in the league on Saturday and Emenalo said that it would not be an issue if the club go into the game without a manager.

Speaking earlier this month, Mourinho hinted at the problems within the dressing room that have contributed to his departure by admitting to being too emotional and conceding that players must want to play for him.

“I always says when anyone loses their job it is a sad occasion, and especially for the Premier League because he has to be regarded as one of the greatest managers of his generation”. Former England captain and Chelsea defender John Terry took to Instagram to express his thanks and regret after Mourinho’s Stamford Bridge exit, posting a photo of he and the former manager embracing.

Emmanuel Adebayor could be about to relaunch his Premier League career in January – by joining Chelsea! He’s part of a very big club where he’s not playing much.

Chelsea’s former assistant manager Ray Wilkins branded Hiddink “absolutely perfect” to step in and arrest the Blues’ slump between now and the end of the season.

“Everyone was sad, Mourinho was the best manager the club has ever had”, the left-back told Sky Sports.

“It was a short-lived period with him at Anzhi but it was time well spent”.

The personal conduct of the self-styled “Special One” was also proving damaging to Chelsea, with Mourinho engaging in public spats with referees, a television rights holder and even the club’s doctor over the a year ago.

Mourinho’s final match was Monday’s 1-2 defeat at leaders Leicester City on Monday.

There had been no attempt to undermine Mourinho, with Emenalo pointing out that the new contract he was awarded in August demonstrated the faith the club had in him at that time. “It was a decision taken to protect the interests of the club”. “Whilst there is huge sentiment for the individual who has done so much for the club, the fact of the matter remains that Chelsea Football Club is in trouble”.

“The results are not good”.

“There obviously seems to be palpable discord between manager and players, and we feel it was time to act”.

“The owner is forced to make what was a very tough decision for the good of the club”, said the former Nigeria midfielder.

Hiddink told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf he would listen to Chelsea’s proposals before deciding whether to return to the club he coached to the FA Cup title in 2009.

Newstalk Sport’s Oisin Langan caught up with The Sun’s Deputy Head of Sport Martin Lipton today, to discuss Mourinho’s team at Chelsea and what the future holds for the current Premier League champions.

“They played to instruction”.
