Chelsea Clinton challenges Ivanka Trump on equal pay for women

There was a moment of love and joy as Hillary and Chelsea Clinton hugged on stage after the proud daughter introduced her mother for her keynote DNC address Thursday.

The daughter who spent her formative years growing up in the White House will try to convince the American public that they should send her mother back there, this time as United States president. I’m here as a proud American, a proud Democrat, a proud mother, and tonight in particular, a very, very proud daughter.

Chelsea Clinton tells the Democratic convention that her mother has always made her feel “valued and loved”, and she says Hillary Clinton wants that for every child.

Chelsea Clinton recalled talking to her parents at the dinner table about the book “A Wrinkle In Time” as a child.

Hillary was watching Chelsea’s speech with a mother’s pride back stage.

I loved that my parents expected me to have opinions, and to be able to back them up with facts. I never once doubted that they cared about my thoughts and ideas. “At 14-years-old, it was tough to watch”.

Chelsea finally gave her parents the title they had both been coveting for a long time – grandparents – in September 2014 with the birth of her daughter, Charlotte.

“This election is so important to me because I’m now a mom”, Chelsea told NBC’s Matt Lauer on Thursday. “It will be interesting to see what Chelsea can do”.

The only child to Bill and Hillary spent her teen years inside Washington, D.C., where she attended private school at Sidwell Friends School. And she hasn’t ruled out her own political bid one day. Chelsea said she would ask Ivanka, a longtime friend.

She would later return to America and complete earn a doctorate at Columbia University and NYU. “It’s because she never, ever, forgets who she’s fighting for”.

“We are all over the moon as Chelsea and Marc welcome Charlotte’s little brother to the world and grateful for our many blessings”, the Clintons said on social media upon their second grandchild’s arrival. But now she’s embraced the role as a surrogate for her mother, taking on a major part in her family’s foundation.

That line, which seemed an oblique reference to GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, was met by loud applause from the audience. “He loses his cool at the slightest provocation”.

Asked if she would consider holding a “children’s summit” with Ivanka to try to raise the tone of the election campaign, Chelsea said it had not occurred her but it was “certainly something I would consider”. No, what she really needed to do in this speech was find a way to turn her gender from a liability to an asset, to get people to stop associating “woman president” with all their witchiest fears of women with power and instead associate her with another female stereotype, of the humble but hard-working team player. (More on that here) She eventually earned master’s degrees from Oxford University in worldwide relations two years ago.

She defended John McCain, who was chastised by Trump for becoming a prisoner of war. Chelsea’s speech was warm and believable and full of great stories, unlike the speeches given by Trump’s family at his convention.
