Chelsea hold talks with Montreal over Didier Drogba
Chelsea’s new boss Guus Hiddink has reiterated his admiration for “legend” Didier Drogba, but insisted the club’s board would handle any extra back-room recruits.

“There must be a great desire to play and if you don’t have that desire, please knock on my door and we’ll talk”. But our objective is to have him back for another season, as agreed in his contract. Though the Canadian club stated its desire to keep hold of Drogba, it also admitted the situation was out of its control. However, his reported £30 million valuation would be an extraordinary fee for Chelsea to pay for a soon-to-be 29-year-old who has only scored regularly at the top level for six months.
Despite ultimately clinching a spot in the Champions League in a win over FC Porto, Abramovich chose to fire Mourinho and replace him with interim manager Guus Hiddink.
“That’s not to do with me”, Hiddink said.
Hazard missed the 3-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday after being forced off with a hip problem during the 2-1 defeat at Leicester City – which proved to be Mourinho’s last game in charge.
“He is a legend, both in and (outside) of the club”, he added.
“But I think all clubs have these specific figures who can make a very good contribution, being ambassador or coach or manager, and they give the brand Chelsea a big image worldwide”.
Regardless of how exhausted his legs may be at the end of this season, it’s for that reason alone that he can not be allowed to depart Stamford Bridge.
Their appalling title defence led to Mourinho’s departure and Hiddink, who led Chelsea to FA Cup success during an interim spell in 2009, believes the players should be analysing where it has gone wrong. This is a team and a club that have reached a crossroads and now is the time to ensure a wrong turn isn’t made.
The former Chelsea player still has one year remaining on his deal in Montreal. Karim Benzema has been one of the world’s premier forwards for some time, but he is now under investigation over an alleged blackmail on worldwide teammate Mathieu Valbuena, leading to his suspension from the France team.
Hiddink said: “He’s a young guy I know”.
Didier Drogba might be headed back to Chelsea after all.
