Cheney wins GOP primary in Wyoming

Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, won the Republican primary for Wyoming’s only House seat Tuesday, meaning one of the most famous names in Republican politics will likely return to Washington.

“I’m honored by the trust Wyoming Republicans have placed in me to serve as our next Representative in Congress”, Cheney said in a statement in reaction to her win.

“Hillary Clinton represents a continuation of the same failed policies”.

No Democrat has occupied Wyoming’s lone U.S. House seat since before Dick Cheney first won the it in 1979, and with the GOP’s 3-to-1 voter registration advantage, Liz Cheney is expected to beat Democrat Ryan Greene in November.

Cheney had 40 percent of the vote to state Sen. As NBC notes, her campaign ” focused on national security and rolling back federal regulations affecting Wyoming’s beleaguered coal industry”.

“No state has been hurt more by Barack Obama’s agenda over the past seven-and-a-half years than Wyoming”, said Cheney.

Unsurprisingly Ms Cheney has never evinced any reservations about her father’s legacy. He remained in the House for ten years, then going on to be Secretary of Defense for former President George H W Bush.

Liz Cheney pledged in statement after her win to “defend our constitutional rights and our way of life”.

What’s especially notable about Cheney’s victory is the degree to which the former Fox News pundit and State Department official had to undo the damage done by her last congressional bid.
