Cheshire firefighters have busy Bonfire Night

Watch manager Ian Mullen, arson reduction co-ordinator at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, said: “There was an increase in the number of fires caused by anti-social behaviour attended by firefighters in Merseyside on Bonfire Night”.

The service received more than 300 calls between 4.30pm and midnight despite heavy rain.

The service’s deputy chief officer, Alex Clark, criticised those who put firefighters in danger.

Elsewhere a total of more than 68,000 people enjoyed a safe and happy bonfire night at organised events where fires and firework displays were properly managed and hugely successful.

“This year we have worked with our partners to reduce deliberate secondary fires leading up to Bonfire Night”.

Youths across Greater Manchester gave firefighters a headache after setting off fires near houses; throwing fireworks; and setting playground equipment alight.

“People can help the Fire Service by ensuring that wheelie bins and rubbish is not left at the roadside to become a target for this kind of irresponsible and illegal activity”.

The spokesman said: “Firefighters in breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets and a main jet as a safety jet”.

The SFRS crews requested an ambulance attend as three men appeared to be suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation. Paramedics then provided them with precautionary check-ups at the scene.

FIREFIGHTERS are busy tackling nuisance bonfires in and around Bolton.

“They were landing as close as a metre away”.

Elsewhere, in Larbert, a fire crew was subjected to a verbal attack when they were called to an out-of-control bonfire with gas cannisters in a park opposite Southview in Stenhousemuir.

“This weekend we should continue to be mindful of how unsafe fireworks, bonfires and even sparklers can be”.
