The first preseason game for the Bulls is set for October. 6 against Milwaukee, so it’ll be interesting to see what the Bulls will look like moving forward without Dunleavy in the fray. Conservative measures failed to resolve his symptoms, the team said, leading to the choice to have surgery, which was performed at Rush University Medical Center.

Chicago Bulls forward Mike Dunleavy underwent lower back surgery on Friday is slated to miss the next 8-10 weeks.

With training camp right around the corner, Dunleavy’s injury comes at a very inopportune time.

He started 12 postseason games, and averaged 10.9 points while shooting 48.2 percent from long range in those contests. He missed an extended stretch because of a nagging ankle injury.

Dunleavy, 35, signed a three-year, $14 million contract in July. Youngsters Tony Snell and Doug McDermott must step up in his absence, while Nikola Mirotic can also slide down from power forward to fill in on the wing. McDermott was the team’s first-round pick in 2014 but fell out of the regular rotation under former coach Tom Thibodeau after an early season knee problem.
