Chicago Cubs unable to salvage series finale, swept 7-2 at Wrigley

St. Louis Cardinals’ Kolten Wong (16), celebrates with teammate Aledmys Diaz left, after scoring on a Matt Carpenter two RBI double during the sixth inning of a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, June 22, 2016, in. It doesn’t mean anything-this team was excellent yesterday, excellent today, and will be excellent tomorrow-but that doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have felt a lot better if the Cubs had, you know, won these games. He’s 3-4 with a 5.90 ERA.

“If it wasn’t 7-0, I think I would have stayed in the game”, Rizzo said. “My fastball was a little erratic and my cutter was not very good”. But luckily my curve ball was there and we made it work. It’s also the first time they have lost three straight games at home, where they were previously 25-8 (25-11 still isn’t too shabby, obviously). “We were there previous year, and the only thing you can do is win baseball games”.

The victory was the second straight for the Cardinals (37-33) in a series that wraps up Wednesday.

Three games later, St. Louis showed the NL Central might not be sewn up just yet.

“It was kind of like Groundhog Day, the same game as last night”, said Cubs manager Joe Maddon. “Well-played on both sides, we just couldn’t get a hit when we needed to”.

Senior Vice President, Player Development and Amateur Scouting Jason McLeod receives the fewest headlines out of Cubs President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein, General Manager Jed Hoyer, and himself – however, his role in putting together this collection of young bats throughout the Cubs system should not go unnoticed. “They scored one more run than we did, give them credit”.

Locke (6-5) allowed five hits, no walks and struck out three, helping the Pirates to just their second win in 12 games.

Hanley Ramirez, dropped to seventh in Boston’s batting order, snapped a 4-4 tie with a solo homer in the sixth, and Xander Bogaerts drove in his third run of the game later in the inning.

Wainwright allowed three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

CL Trevor Rosenthal earned his 14th save of the season, giving up one hit and one walk, before retiring the side in the ninth.

Hammel departed with two outs in the sixth and with a runner on.

They selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Gerardo Concepcion, who made his major league debut in Tuesday’s game, and recalled right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa.

Concepcion struck out Brandon Moss on five pitches to end the inning and also worked a scoreless seventh.

“We grinded one through nine”, Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter said.

The Chicago Cubs are always on the cutting edge when it comes to goofy clubhouse gimmicks and road trip ideas, and they’re at it again as they prepare to invade South Beach this weekend. Chris Coghlan drew a leadoff walk and hustled home on a double from Jason Heyward. The Cubs’ Rizzo, Zobrist, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell continued to lead at their infield positions.

The Cardinals scored two in the fifth on an error, then had the big sixth inning.
