Chicago fires police officer after fatal shooting of black teen Laquan McDonald
At a press conference Tuesday, Emanuel lauded the service of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, but said the city’s “trust in the department” had been shaken by events surrounding the police shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Madigan announced that she made her request just hours after Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel chose to fire his Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

The video footage-among a string of police shootings of black boys or men in the United States-triggered protests in Chicago and fueled a national debate about racism and the use of deadly force by officers.
“As Mr. McCarthy knows, a police officer is only as effective as when he has the trust of those he serves”, Emanuel said.
“He has become an issue, rather than dealing with the issue, and a distraction”, said Mr Emanuel, a Democrat who was previously President Barack Obama’s White House chief of staff.
Charged with first-degree murder, Van Dyke fired his first shot at 9:57 p.m. When asked if he was certain that the officers deleted the footage of the killing, Darshane answered, “Yes”. Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez has said the three-inch (eight-centimetre) blade recovered from the scene had been folded into the handle.
The hashtag #ResignRahm has gained traction on social media in the past few days, spurred by angry Chicago citizens and activists nationwide who credit Emanuel for what they say is city hall’s cover-up of the circumstances of McDonald’s death.
Van Dyke was released from jail Monday after paying the $150,000 required of his $1.5 million bail.
The Chicago Tribune noted “McCarthy’s tour atop the department was longer than typical for the pressure-cooker job of running one of the nation’s largest, and most controversial, police departments”. He said that in asking for McCarthy’s resignation, his goal was to “confront the challenges” that face the department and “go forward” with “fresh eyes and new leadership”.
The video revealed a different story when it was released.
One week ago, dashcam video released showed one of Mccarthy’s officers taking out a black teen with 16 bullets.
“I don’t have a specific list today but people who are engaged in these issues, who have constructive things to say, are people we are going to want to engage with”, Lightfoot said.
It was eventually made public last week after a judge ordered its release.
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate whether the Chicago Police Department’s practices violate federal and constitutional law.

“The city and the police have been blocking us at every step”, Oppenheimer told CNN’s Brooke Baldwin on Tuesday.
