Chicago Hits 20-Year High in Gun Violence
One of the frustrations of Chicago, say both Walker and Jenkins, is that the city had begun to implement “focused deterrence” strategies touted as the most sophisticated for combating gun violence – an approach combining police investigatory capacities with social-service interventions created to help potential victims and perpetrators of violence build alternatives.

Tio Hardiman, formerly of the violence prevention group Ceasefire, says he wants resources to train hundreds of people in “the art of violence interruption”. The death of 32-year-old Nykea Aldridge this past weekend certainly got the media’s attention, but not because she was a mom who was killed by a couple of losers who should’ve been behind bars thanks to their criminal records.
Aldridge was shot in the head as she pushed one of her four children in a stroller in the 6300 block of South Calumet in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood, a particularly violent area colloquially known as “O Block”.
The 90 homicides were the most the city has seen in any month since August 1996.
Overall this year, there have been more homicides in Chicago than New York City and Los Angeles combined, CBS Chicago reported.
Police said the siblings are gang members and convicted felons, who were out on parole when they accidentally shot Wade’s relative. On Tuesday, he said he would make a “major address” on gun violence in mid-September.
Hardiman said his Violence Interrupters network consists of about 2,000 to 3,000 people. We’re too divided as a people.
Chicago has recovered an illegal handgun for every hour of the year of 2016, he added. Hardiman says he needs millions of dollars for such training.
The Chicago Tribune has compiled a database of every police shooting in Chicago over the last six years, offering insight into police use of deadly force in the city. “We have a history and expertise in working with that population”.
Gun violence is ravaging America’s second-largest city. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. You have got to watch the police, you have got to watch the brothers in the community. Aldridge was not the intended target or involved in the dispute, he said, which is also what police have stated.
Later this afternoon, Chicagoans will lead a symbolic funeral procession on the West Side from a closed public school, Nathaniel Pope Elementary, to Mt. Sinai Hospital. Mayor Rahm Emanuel has blamed the spike on an increase in gang activity, and has called for stricter gun restrictions. Their job is done when they pass a law.
“I have to keep going back to the fact that the entire city of Chicago is not at risk for these types of things”, he said.
Another community leader reacting to Chicago’s violence is the Rev. Jesse Jackson of the Rainbow Push Coalition.
“Chicago is in a fragile state, however it’s not what Donald Trump is saying it is”, Rhymefest said.
The White House did not immediately respond to Jackson’s criticism.
Eighty-four homicides – 84 slaughtered souls.
In Washington, D.C., homicides rose in 2015 for the first time in a decade, according to that city’s police chief, Cathy Lanier. On Sept. 1, several Democrats in the U.S. Senate called for their Republican colleagues to address gun legislation, more than two months after several House Democrats staged a sit-in on the floor of the chamber.
Compare those numbers to a year ago and you will see that Chicago is as violent in the first 8 months of 2016 as all of 2015.
Chicago is in a state of undeclared war.
A total of 67 people were shot over the weekend and 11 of them died.
This is an emergency. “It’s a whole different risk question for them”.

Here are the two men. No one wins and everybody loses. There’s no doubt that many of us will be voting in November with that devastating figure in mind. We must not surrender or accept this as the norm. That may be scarce in Chicago now, and getting scarcer. “We’re gonna grow bigger and stronger because (there) has to be some healing”.
