Chicago Latinos Disapprove Mayor Rahm Emanuel, But Approve of Police Department

The mayor has said he did not want to jeopardize what was then a joint investigation by Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and the Chicago U.S. attorney’s office. The Department of Justice announced this week that is has launched a civil rights investigation into the Chicago Police Department’s pattern and practices and will focus on the use of force and accountability within the police department.

The pastors are circulating a petition of “no confidence” in Emanuel, and are supportive of a Chicago state lawmaker’s proposal to allow for the mayor to be removed from office, a measure that was introduced Wednesday.

He fired the police chief and named a new head of the independent body that investigates police conduct.

Prosecutors chose to charge Van Dyke because he was not facing an immediate threat from McDonald, and because he continued to fire at the teen as he lay on the ground after being shot.
