Chicago Mayor Emanuel meeting with justice dept. about police work
In a news conference last month to release the video, Emanuel told reporters it was clear “Van Dyke violated both the standards of professionalism that come with being a police officer but also basic moral standards that bind our community together”. The judicial judge agreed to be scheduled his arraignment for December 29.

The chant of “16 shots” could clearly be heard among students at Urban Prep after a visit and address from Emanuel, who later said he understands the outrage and the need for getting to the root of the problems within the police department. The officer was charged with first-degree murder for shooting McDonald 16 times.
Van Dyke fired at McDonald 16 times within seconds of arriving on the scene, saying that he feared for his life.
A small group of protesters shouted insults at Van Dyke as he left the court house.
The U.S. Department of Justice wants Chicago to know exactly how to submit complaints about the Chicago Police Department in the wake of the release of the Laquan McDonald shooting video and has distributed those details to community leaders. Jason Van Dyke appeared at a preliminary courtroom hearing Friday. for the 1st time since a grand jury indicted him earlier this current week.
Rahm Emanuel “has essentially told everyone in the public, everyone in the City Council that my client actually murdered Mr. McDonald, and [that] he’s a bad apple and that he doesn’t belong in the police department and he committed acts that were indefensible”, Herbert said.
Van Dyke was initially charged with murder by the county prosecutor on November 24, becoming the first Chicago officer to be charged with murder in an on-duty killing in more than three decades.
It has been a tough few weeks for Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Jason Van Dyke, the white Chicago police officer charged last month in the death of a black teenager, Laquan McDonald, has been formally indicted on seven counts related to the fatal October 2014 shooting.
“That’s an important day because we will be assigned a judge and from there we get into trial preparation”, said Van Dyke’s attorney Dan Herbert.
A U.S. Department of Justice statement says members of the public are encouraged to call or email to share “information relevant to the investigation”.
