Chicago Mayor Met With ’16 Shots!’ Chant During School Visit
Two Chicago police officers involved with the investigation of the shooting of Laquan McDonald a year ago have received promotions within the department, according to reports. Van Dyke, who is white, was indicted earlier this week and was scheduled to appear before a judge at noon CST Friday in Cook County Criminal Court, the Associated Press reported.

The DOJ investigation comes after the city released a video showing a white police officer shooting a black teenager 16 times.
Several people shouted profanities and pounded on the black pickup truck before it pulled away with officer Jason Van Dyke inside.
Herbert told reporters he wants the trial moved to a county “outside the reach” of Mayor Emanuel’s comments. Van Dyke shot the teen 16 times in a 2014 shooting captured on a squad vehicle video.
With Chicago and the U.S. Department of Justice embarking on a process to bring reform to the Chicago Police Department, a group of African-American police officer and firefighters is demanding a seat at the table.
The suspended cop, who was freed on $15 million bail, was formally charged with six counts of first degree murder, as well as a charge of official misconduct, alleging Van Dyke committed murder while acting in his official capacity as a Chicago police officer.
“We hold our police officers to a high standard and obviously in this case, Jason Van Dyke violated both the standards of professionalism that come with being a police officer but also basic moral standards that bind our community together”, Emanuel said.
“He has essentially told everyone in the public, everyone in the City Council that my client actually murdered Mr. McDonald and that he’s a bad apple and he doesn’t belong in the police department and he committed acts that were indefensible”, Herbert said. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office issued a statement, “We have a mutual goal to create a stronger, better police department that keeps our neighborhoods safe while respecting the civil rights of every Chicagoan”.
Similar complaints have been raised for years but Wooten says he and others believe now is the time to affect change while the federal Department of Justice is investigating Chicago Police.

Since the video’s release, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy resigned from his position and the Justice Department has launched a federal investigation into the incident. The email is [email protected].
