According to the Sun-Times, Emanuel couldn’t leave Cuba at the time of the shootings, because he’s in a rural area without regular air service.
The grieving family of a 19-year-old college student who was fatally shot by Chicago police filed a lawsuit Monday against the city – just a day after one of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s top aides was physically assaulted while attending the man’s vigil.
News reports said the teen struggled with mental health issues, and had been threatening his father with a baseball bat.
The Justice Department will be investigating the conduct and practices of the Chicago Police Department, a decision that came soon after the McDonald video had been made public.
CHICAGO-At a time when the city’s police department is under fire with daily protests decrying excessive use of deadly force, two unarmed Black people have again been gunned down.
A Chicago police officer “accidentally struck and tragically killed” a mother of five after responding to a domestic disturbance, department officials say. Many said if they call the police for help, the police will kill them.
CNN notes that Emanuel has been under fire for a series of fatal police shootings.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said an investigation had been launched.
Chicago police accidentally shot and killed Bettie Jones as she opened her door.
In 2009, Henry was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff in the Mayor’s Office for Community and Faith-Based Initiatives by Emanuel’s predecessor, mayor Richard M. Daley. “As far as the police … if you are (so) afraid of these streets to the point that you’ve got to shoot first, you need to turn your badge in”, said Ms. Turner. “We will continue to ask tough questions of the police department, of the investigative agencies, and of ourselves, to drive the reforms the people of Chicago deserve and expect”.
Training also has been inconsistent at the city’s 911 center, where dispatchers should ask questions to determine if a situation involves someone with a mental health issue, then dispatch a CIT-trained officer if one is needed.
A white Chicago police officer charged with murder in the 2014 fatal shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald pleaded not guilty Tuesday.
Both Adam and LeGrier family attorney, Basileios Foutris, say police have already seized video from some of the nearby homes.
At the station, Antonio LeGrier was not allowed to leave, the lawsuit claims, until giving statements to detectives and to investigators from the Independent Police Review Authority. McDonald’s and other high-profile police killings drove hundreds of protesters to block Chicago’s retail district on Black Friday, the U.S.’s post-Thanksgiving sales event.
In an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, civil rights activist Al Sharpton said Emanuel should step down, adding that he wondered why Emanuel had stayed in Cuba, where he is on a family vacation.
Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Monday he did not know if there was video of the shooting.

The video, which was released only after a judge’s order, has led to changes.
