Chicago mayor says every police officer to be equipped with Taser

The Associated Press reports that the emails show “the Chicago mayor’s office, police and the body that investigates police shootings closely coordinated their actions” following McDonald’s death. “And like all of us, they are human and they make mistakes”, the mayor said.

But the video showed that the young man, although carrying a knife, was moving away from the officers when he was shot repeatedly. He’s come under increasing pressure since the November release of dashcam video showing the officer shooting McDonald.

About 1,860 officers – or roughly 15 percent of Chicago’s police force – have completed the training, according to department statistics.

AMR offers safe ride home
Slidell: Anyone who lives in Slidell can get a free ride home from the police department through its “safe and sober” program. Captain Jim Sizemore of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said deputies will be out in full force to keep people safe.

Emanuel’s office says he plans to lay out new policies Wednesday regarding police training and use of force.

Mum Kills Daughter Thinking She Was Intruder
Because the shooter wasn’t a law enforcement officer, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will not be investigating. The daughter had been visiting from North Carolina and didn’t live in the home, Roberts said.

Emanuel noted that on audio recordings of communications between dispatchers and officers on the scene that night, several officers are heard “frantically” asking for a Taser before officer Jason Van Dyke shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Van Dyke pleaded not guilty Tuesday to six counts of first-degree murder and one count of official misconduct.

However, the shootings have continued.

Tasers have been available to Chicago officers for years, but not every officer is trained in using them or carries them. Ald. LeGrier had been angrily threatening his father early that morning, which prompted a 911 call to police. Most U.S. police receive little or no training on how to de-escalate crisis situations involving the mentally ill or people under the effect of drugs or alcohol, despite the growing frequency of such encounters and fatal results in a number of recent cases.

“Kind of the full extent of everything is when corporation counsel Steve Patton had reached kind of an agreement, in principle, with the family”, said Mayor Emanuel.

The bullets also struck down Bettie Jones, who police say happened to open her front door at the wrong time.

Bettie Jones (left), 55, who police said was shot accidentally, and 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier (right) were both killed last weekend in Chicago. Earlier this month, Emanuel demanded “sweeping police reform” in a speech to the city council, fired his police superintendent, Garry McCarthy, and created a reform panel (s.o.p) that included Deval Patrick, the former MA governor and a Chicago native, a former Illinois State Police director, and the president of the Chicago Police Board.

The city has also called on Interim Police Supt.

CHICAGO (AP) – City officials released hundreds of emails Thursday related to a police video that was kept secret for more than a year after a white Chicago officer shot a black teenager 16 times.

“We announce that any officer involved in shootings will be put on desk duty for 30 days so we can assess their fitness for duty. But to recognize the degrees in between so they can respond to appropriately to each individual situation, where force can be the last option, not the first choice”. The victim was carrying a knife but was moving away from officers when he was shot at 16 times and killed. Police, already under a federal civil rights investigation over use of deadly force, have admitted the woman’s death was an accident.
