One offices was shot shot in the back, another in the foot and the third in the chest, though the bullet might have struck the bullet-proof vest.
The suspects opened fire when the officers confronted them. After the shooting, all three were taken to a hospital.
The man then fired at police officers, and “at least one officer returned fire”, shooting and killing the attacker.
When police approached and tried to speak with them, the man produced a handgun and started shooting at them.
The last duty-related death of a Chicago Police officer happened on December 29, 2011, when masked men robbed a West Side convenience store and shot Officer Clifton Lewis, an eight-year veteran moonlighting as a security guard. The officers were rushed to Stroger Hospital for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening, according to police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
Emanuel released a statement saying that “every day” officers “put themselves in danger so the rest of us can be safe”.
Chicago police say a woman is being questioned in connection with a shootout between several officers investigating drug activity and a suspect they were pursuing.
“Officers gave chase and followed one of the offenders into a dark gangway between two buildings”. Only one of the officers is in serious condition, authorities said.
Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Independent Police Review Authority, told the Chicago Sun-Times the officers were shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the city’s West Side. “I want to thank the Chicago Fire Department for their quick response in getting our officers here safely”, Escalante said Monday. “The thoughts and prayers of our entire city are with the officers and their families during this hard time”.
