Earlier this month, the Justice Department announced an investigation into the Chicago Police Department’s use of deadly force and officer discipline.
Police also fatally shot 55-year-old Bettie Jones, who lived downstairs. Activists joined the family and called for changes in the way police officers behave as well as the way city officials oversee the department and respond to officer-involved shootings.
“For her to fall victim to the very thing she fought against – it’s disgusting”, Jones’s cousin, Nikia Glover, 39, told The Washington Post in a telephone interview.
“Anytime an officer uses force the public deserves answers, and regardless of the circumstances, we all grieve anytime there is a loss of life in our city”, Emanuel said in the statement. After the release of the video of Laquan McDonald’s murder, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez released video of the police killing of Ronald Johnson, shot to death in October 2014. Reporter: A emotional vigil for the victims this afternoon.? “She should not have had to open her door and be shot down by a Chicago police officer”, said Jones’ nephew, Jahmal Cole, during a Sunday press conference.
The mayor has already welcomed a U.S. Justice Department investigation into whether Chicago police have made a habit of violating the law.
“Why do (police) have to shoot first and ask questions later?” Police were called to a home after a father called 911 over his son threatening him with an aluminum bat.
LeGrier’s father, Antonio LeGrier, told the Sun-Times that he could see the officer who shot LeGrier knew that “he messed up” by shooting LeGrier and Jones.
“She was a handsome woman”, said Jacqueline Walker, a friend of Jones’.
“Upon arrival, officers were confronted by a combative subject resulting in the discharging of the officer’s weapon which fatally wounded two individuals”, Chicago police said in a statement. An Independent Police Review Authority investigation is under way.
There is speculation that mental-health issues played a role in LeGrier’s behavior.
LeGrier’s father told the Chicago Sun-Times he had invited his son to a family holiday gathering before the shooting but he chose not to go.
Cooksey denied that her son exhibited “combative behavior”.
“He ran a marathon previous year for a charity”, Cooksey said. Officers in Chicago killing a teenager and his neighbor, a mother of five, inside her own home. “It’s ridiculous. Somebody needs to do something about this”, said Jaqueline Walker, Jones’ friend.
A statement released by the department said the officers would be place on administrative duties for 30 days, the AP reported.
“When is the mayor going to step up?” she asked. Because we can’t get no help from the police.
In late November, Obama released a brief statement on Facebook saying he was “deeply disturbed” by the McDonald video. “Why does shooting someone to death seem to be the default tactics of the city’s police force?”
Adds comments from daughter of the woman who was killed. “This is not a new phenomenon, just one that is raised to a new level”, he said.
“While Mayor Emanuel has been in constant contact with his staff and Interim Superintendent (John) Escalante, he is cutting his family trip short so that he can continue the ongoing work of restoring accountability and trust in the Chicago Police Department”, said Kelley Quinn. He says he wants them to review the training around how officers respond to mental health crisis calls. He said his son tried to bust the door open, but he kept him from doing so and called police. A protest is planned this week outside the office of one of Emanuel’s top backers, Kenneth Griffin, the Chicago billionaire who is the chief executive of hedge fund Citadel.

Across the street, LaRue Evans, 65, watched the vigil from in front of her house. She said, “That’s not my son’s character… he’s a happy child, not a violent child”.
