McCarthy said Friday that Morgan was a convicted felon who had early on been identified as a person of interest. “After that day, [Morgan] and two others went out daily equipped with guns, looking to retaliate”.

“All three (suspects) are in the same gang”, he told reporters.

Tyshawn’s mother, Karla Lee said after court the charges against Morgan are “sickening” but she’s happy he’s been brought to justice.

“You’re only making the problem worse by talking about obliterating”, said Alvin Agee, who lives near the alley where Tyshawn was murdered.

One bullet cut through the boy’s right thumb, suggesting he was holding his hands out to block the gunshots, according to an autopsy report. So far, Morgan is only suspect of the three in custody for the boy’s execution-style murder.

Morgan has been repeatedly questioned about Tyshawn’s murder. “It’s not clear who lured, who drove or who pulled the trigger”. Another man is now in custody on unrelated charges. Police believe Tyshawn’s death was connected to his father’s involvement in the conflict. The bond was set for $1 million, in which Morgan made the $100K bail and was subsequently released.

Tyshawn Lee, 9, was shot and killed in a South Side alley Monday afternoon. The second suspect is believed to be in the area, McCarthy said.

During his interview with the Tribune, Stokes did not talk specifically about whether he was a gang member but said he disagreed with what police have said about him.

The Superintendent said that the shooting is “probably the most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I’ve witnessed in 35 years of policing”. “Conscientious” community members also stepped forward.

Superintendent McCarthy says detectives have been working around the clock to solve this case. “There was an terrible lot of fear”. He also expressed frustration with police, saying investigators seemed more interested in him than in finding who shot Tyshawn. Pierre Stokes, Tyshawn’s father, has denied allegations about his gang affiliations.
