Chicago police arrest suspect in fatal, gang-related Chicago shooting of 9

Corey Morgan has been arrested for the murder of Tyshawn Lee, a 9-year-old boy brutally shot execution style in Chicago for what police believe is retaliation between Lee’s father and a rival gang.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a news conference Friday that Corey Morgan of Chicago is in custody.

McCarthy said two other men, included one jailed on an unrelated gun charge, also were suspected of involvement in the death of Tyshawn Lee, who was shot in the middle of the afternoon near his grandmother’s house. They led him to an alley and, with a single gun, shot the boy.

Shooting deaths on the streets of Chicago, sadly, are nothing new.

Investigators don’t know whether any of the men involved in his death knew the 9-year-old personally.

The planned demonstration – which coincides with the busy “Black Friday” shopping day in the U.S. – comes three days after police released video footage showing Jason Van Dyke shooting the teenager 16 times.

Even given the city’s recent history, Tyshawn’s shooting was considered beyond the pale. “A baby was assassinated right behind us in the alley”.

“How can a little boy, 9 years old, defend himself?” “I can tell you this: They are going to be obliterated”.

Authorities say one concern was the “code of silence”: citizens’ unwillingness to trust, and talk to, police.

Meanwhile, marchers are expected to gather in Chicago’s city centre to protest against the police killing of Laquan McDonald, 17, by a white police officer previous year.

However McCarthy insists the shooting was indeed gang related. “There was a lot of fear”.

Chicago Police say they have a person of interest in custody in the fatal shooting earlier this month of a 9-year-old boy on the city’s South Side.

Edwards is on the run, according to investigators, who said he is somewhere in the Chicago area. The boy’s father has repeatedly denied any involvement. “This was clearly not a case of ‘no snitching, ‘” McCarthy said. “And quite frankly, in a heinous crime like this, he’s probably better off if we catch him than somebody else”.
