Chicago police officer pleads not guilty to murder
Jason Van Dyke, the Chicago police officer who shot Laquan McDonald, a black teenager, in 2014, 16 times, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Mr Van Dyke, who is white, is the first Chicago police officer to be charged with murder for an on-duty fatality in more than 30 years.
Van Dyke’s lawyer and his family have previously said they would like the officer’s trial to be held outside of Cook County.
In contradiction of what is shown in the video, a police report said Laquan approached officers with a knife.
Dan Herbert, Van Dyke’s attorney, has said he might try to make a change of venue outside of Chicago, as the case has been so widely publicized, WMAQ-TV in Chicago reported.
Meanwhile, Cleveland police and prosecutors faced continued criticism on Tuesday, a day after a grand jury decided not to charge two white police officers in the shooting death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy in 2014 who was playing with a toy gun in a park. Bettie Jones, a 55-year-old neighbor of Legrier, was accidentally shot on Saturday.
“Our police officers have a very hard and unsafe job”.
Elsewhere in Chicago, about 20 protesters gathered outside the mayor’s house on Tuesday, according to CBS Chicago. At least two squad cars are visible, and McDonald can be seen walking away from officers.
One of the interesting controversies about police officers like Van Dyke charged with serious crimes is that they remain on the police payroll.
Van Dyke, who remained on desk duty after the shooting, had a history of complaints in his law enforcement career.
That pressure intensified during Mr. Emanuel’s vacation to Cuba, which he planned to cut short this week “so that he can continue the ongoing work of restoring accountability and trust in the Chicago Police Department”, a spokeswoman said.
The changes come amid an uproar over shootings by police, including one in which a white officer shot a black teenager 16 times.
Herbert has said the video fails to provide context for the shooting.
The mayor’s office, which had already said some changes would be forthcoming, said in a statement late Tuesday night that Emanuel and Interim Police Superintendent John Escalante would announce Wednesday “a major overhaul” of the policy regarding how officers respond to incidents and the use of force.
Emanuel spokesman Adam Collins said Tuesday the office is aware of an “altercation” involving a mayoral staffer. “I maintain that, and I need someone to prove me wrong by bringing justice in the Jason Van Dyke case”.

The footage was made public in November after people called for its release for months.
