Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, stated the officer was shot in his lower body but was uncertain about his condition. The Chicago police transported the officer without an ambulance in a department vehicle. Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement on the shooting, saying, “Tonight the thoughts and prayers of Chicago are with our fearless police officer who was shot answering a call as he worked to keep our streets safe”. A source at the scene said the officer may have been on a bicycle when he was shot. The officer’s condition wasn’t immediately known.
According to Johnson, the officer and his partner approached a man talking on a cell phone and requested that he hang up so they could talk to him. He says both officers returned fire, killing the suspect. He was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
