Chicago police officer shot near Soldier Field; suspect fatally shot by police

A Chicago Police officer was wounded in a shooting Thursday night on Chicago’s Near South Side.

The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m.at 18th and Calumet, CBS Chicago reported. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, stated the officer was shot in his lower body but was uncertain about his condition. The Chicago police transported the officer without an ambulance in a department vehicle. Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement on the shooting, saying, “Tonight the thoughts and prayers of Chicago are with our fearless police officer who was shot answering a call as he worked to keep our streets safe”. A source at the scene said the officer may have been on a bicycle when he was shot. The officer’s condition wasn’t immediately known.

According to Johnson, the officer and his partner approached a man talking on a cell phone and requested that he hang up so they could talk to him. He says both officers returned fire, killing the suspect. He was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening.
