Chicago Police Reports Say Teen Swung Knife

Protesters circled City Hall 16 times to signify the number of times McDonald was shot.

The released film includes 12 camera angles from inside and outside the fast food restaurant on October 20, 2014, but nothing from the infamous 80 minute gap in the footage, which includes the time McDonald was shot by police officer Jason Van Dyke.

There was no indication from city officials on when the video would be made public.

Officer Jason Van Dyke’s statements after the shooting paint Laquan McDonald as an out-of-control assailant who continued to pose a threat, even after being shot.

The video shows Van Dyke opening fire from close range and continuing to fire after McDonald fell to the ground. And that “in defense of his life”, Van Dyke “backpedaled and fired his handgun at McDonald, to stop the attack”. And in Seattle, nearly all police video is posted online almost immediately, though special software blurs the images; a video with clear images must be requested.

The release of the reports comes amid mounting questions about the Chicago Police Department’s handling of the incident, while activists allege that police and city officials tried to cover it up. He says the U.S. Department of Justice is also investigating the 2014 shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

In addition to missing video, the Tribune lawyers noted that “all of the released videos included some sound, but most of it is just the faint noise of the vehicles’ sirens; inexplicably, the videos did not include any audio of officers talking, either in the vehicles or over police radios”. The shooting sparked mass protest during Black Friday weekend and many confrontations with police.

‘If the criminal investigation concludes that any officer participated in any wrongdoing, we will take swift action, ‘ he said in an emailed statement.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel told the media Thursday that the city would drop its fight against the release of the video, and make it available sometime next week.

Another contradiction that emerged with the release of the reports is whether McDonald’s knife was folded when officers recovered it at the scene.

– Charleston, South Carolina: In April, a bystander’s cellphone video prompted police in North Charleston, South Carolina, to release a dashcam video of white officer Michael Slager shooting Walter Scott, an unarmed black man. Slager has been charged with murder and is awaiting a trial date. But one of the police reports said the knife’s “blade was in the open position”. PCP, a hallucinogenic drug, was found in McDonald’s system, according to Alvarez and the medical examiner’s report that was among the documents.

Alvarez says she will not resign, despite calls for her to do so. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has called for an overall federal investigation of police department practices, which Democratic presidential candidates and local Illinois politicians have echoed.
