Chicago protesters stage ‘die-in’ over police shootings after blocking traffic
As required by city law, the board will nominate three candidates for the mayor’s consideration. The city fought its release for months before making it public on November 24. They want to at least be able to say the officer is being charged so as to stymie outrage after people saw the video.

Flowers says Emanuel should step down. Police ruled his death an accident after a bad reaction to antipsychotic drugs.
Second, the mayor discussed the Chicago Police Department and the culture of policing in America.
The half-dozen officers were previously cleared of wrongdoing.
The city and several of its officials have been engulfed in controversy since a video of McDonald’s shooting. He’d been jailed after allegedly attacking his mother. Johnson’s DNA was recovered from the gun and investigators later connected the weapon to a separate shooting from 2013, prosecutors said.
Sharon Fairley, the new head of the city’s Independent Police Review Authority, said it was important for “public confidence” that the inspector general get involved.
Protesters walked down the Magnificent Mile, stopping at intersections and disrupting motorists. That’s pretty much all it took to get Chicagoans to forgive him for four years of cuts, closings, and shady TIF deals. The teenager was shot 16 times by officer Jason Van Dyke.
Now, protesters want Mayor Emanuel to step down also.
Massive crowds flooded the streets of downtown Chicago early Wednesday afternoon.
Protesters also appeared to be headed for a bridge near the Magnificent Mile, which was the site of a Black Friday protest.
Numerous protesters doubted Emanuel’s promise to reform the system.
Beale represents a large portion of Chicago’s South Side. She also accused Emanuel of having “fake (expletive) tears”.
“At this point – in this juncture in the city – he has become an issue rather than dealing with the issue”, he said.
“You know, I have a tough job”, she said. The city was finally forced to release the video under court order.
On the night he was killed, Johnson was in a auto with friends when the vehicle’s back window was shot out by an unidentified gunman. City lawyers say its release will make a fair trial hard.
Many viewed the speech as Emanuel’s effort to sway the populace to his corner.
In the outrage that erupted over the video showing an officer fatally shooting Laquan McDonald, Emanuel sacked his police chief and set up a task force to recommend changes.
Brown said she hasn’t been back home for more than two months – but could still relate to the rising rage.
Emanuel’s standing in the city has taken a beating since the release of the video.
“I think the problem is that a lot of what’s happening now seems reactive”, said Vanessa Williamson, a fellow at the Brookings Institution.
Emanuel said his decision to let McCarthy go was an example of his accountability as mayor, but exempted himself from his own call for “fresh eyes and new leadership”.
The mayor said Chicago’s police must patiently build relationships, sit with parents, sit with youths, listen and be mentors. The Justice Department also announced Monday that it was launching a patterns and practices investigation of the police department. He was even more definitive and emphatic talking about McDonald’s death, which he called “totally avoidable”.
We can not afford to have any resident of our city living in fear of the police and distrusting their words and actions.
A Democrat, Emanuel has been mayor of Chicago – President Barack Obama’s hometown – since 2011.
In a speech before the City Council, Emanuel said Wednesday that the police force needs “complete and total reform”.
She added that she plans to return to Chicago in two weeks for the holidays once her final exams are over.
“This is a joke”, attorney Michael Oppenheimer told reporters about an hour after Alvarez laid out her reasons for not charging Officer George Hernandez.
National Journal: The speech didn’t change many people’s minds about Emanuel. Emanuel held a tearful press conference on Wednesday morning where he admitted responsibility for the latest police scandal.
An Illinois state lawmaker has launched a bid to unseat Chicago’s mayor, under fire for his handling of what activists call police brutality against communities of color.

“Sixteen shots and a cover-up!” they chanted, the common rallying cry evoking the number of times McDonald was shot. The City Council Finance Committee approved a $1.25 million payout to Moore’s family in 2014.
