They are expected to thank the public for demanding justice in the case and change in the culture of the Chicago Police Department.
This comes weeks after Jason Van Dyke, a white Chicago Police Officer, fatally shot black teen Laquan McDonald 16 times previous year.
However, if NBC Chicago’s reporting has indeed uncovered the first evidence that Emanuel’s office was aware that the story his police department was pushing was dishonest, the news will bolster calls for the mayor’s resignation.
Alvarez has pushed back on her critics, saying her office “conducted a meticulous and thorough investigation to build the strongest possible first-degree murder case against Officer Van Dyke”.
Emanuel, who apologized to the public on Wednesday, has become under vast pressure to resign over the shooting.
Protests continue overnight in Chicago in response to fatal police shootings and officer accountability. But protests have continued.
The video was released only after a judge ordered the city to do so.
A relative of the black teenager shot 16 times by a white Chicago police officer remembers him as gentle, loving and fond of telling jokes. “We understand the media has to make money, but how would you feel?” While a police review board previously found the officers’ actions justified, Emanuel said he did not see how the treatment of the man – who later died following a reaction to an antipsychotics drug – could “possibly be acceptable” and said he did not consider the investigation closed. Many marched up State Street near Washington. Records show he was taken from his house at the age of 3 because the state’s Department of Children and Family Services determined his mother didn’t provide proper supervision.
The emails are dated December 8, 2014 – less than two months after Van Dyke killed McDonald, nearly two months before Election Day in 2015, and almost a full year before charges were finally filed against Van Dyke.
The city argues that the release of the Chatman footage would interfere with an unbiased trial, but three South Side pastors held a news conference early Friday morning to demand that the footage be released to the public. In comparison, 62 percent of black Chicago voters disapprove of the city police department and just 34 percent approve.
