Chicago releases hundreds of emails in Laquan McDonald shooting
The Thursday protest against the city’s police force came after a series of fatal police shootings. They put their lives on the line so the rest of us can be safe. They said they’ll continue to show up for 16 days in all.

He said it’s important to focus on the fundamental issues underlying violence, citing the need to control the illegal gun market and supply jobs for youth.
Reform plans include proper taser training that will equip 1,400 cops with the device and a mandatory desk-duty sentence of 30 days for any officer involved in a shooting. “We’re here to say that’s enough”.
The last couple of months have been rough for Chicago police, in the wake of the court-ordered release of dashcam video showing a white officer fatally shooting black teen Laquan McDonald during an encounter in October 2014.
McDonald, armed with a knife, is seen veering away from Van Dyke in the video before the veteran officer starts firing.
The release of those emails comes one day after Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced changes in how the Chicago Police Department will operate.
Protesters rallied outside Emanuel’s office and staged several die-in protests on the ground floor of the building.
Chicago police have always been under fire over what critics describe as a police culture of “shoot first and ask questions later”.
CHICAGO (AP) – City officials released hundreds of emails Thursday related to a police video that was kept secret for more than a year after a white Chicago officer shot a black teenager 16 times.
With advancing technology, we as people have more evidence than ever that injustice happens on a daily basis involving the police. Bettie Jones, a 55-year-old neighbor of Legrier, was accidentally shot on Saturday.
Chicago’s top prosecutor asked the FBI to investigate the fatal shooting of two people by a Chicago police officer who was answering an domestic disturbance call.
The weekend shootings of Jones and LeGrier increased tensions in Chicago, forcing Emanuel to return early from a family vacation to deal with the fallout.
His office said he cut his trip short and returned to Chicago on Tuesday.
Emanuel has denied ever seeing the video prior to its release, a contention many activists have said they do not believe. Advocates say that number should be 25 to 35 percent. What would send the message, he said, is legal action against officers and other officials who attempted to hide facts surrounding McDonald’s death.
