The shooting happened just before 2 p.m.at 22nd Street and Haskell Avenue.
Investigators said officers reached the scene about five minutes later and said several people jumped out of the vehicle.
Police Chief Terry Zeigler tweeted that the officer was shot Tuesday afternoon and said the officer’s condition is unknown, but he tweeted “start prayers”. As an officer pursued more suspects, more shots were fired, and the officer was hit.
Fox 4 journalist Rob Zerwekh said that one suspect is in custody following the shooting. The captain was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.
The shooting occurred around a residential intersection about two and a half miles from the police department’s headquarters, Zeigler said.
